Zipcar auto-sharing network, Ford Canada expand focus on university market
TORONTO - The Zipcar auto-sharing network and Ford in are expanding their alliance to focus on 11 universities across Canada.
It's the expansion of a push they began last year on campuses in the United States.
Zipcar and its rival AutoShare operate fleets of cars that can be used for short hops by membership holders.
The alliance between Ford and Zipcar will provide both companies with an opportunity to attract new customers in an attractive demographic segment.
Zipcar says it will mark the Ford Canada alliance by knocking $10 off the $35 annual membership fee for the first 5,000 new university members who sign up.
They'll also reduce the hourly rate for the first 50,000 hours of use of any new Ford vehicles at selected universities as part of the promotion.
The companies say Ford vehicles will make up 60 per cent of Zipcar's North American university fleet by this September.
