ATHENS -- Masked youths hurled firebombs and chunks of marble at police during a march in Athens on Sunday to mark the first anniversary of the police shooting of a teenager whose death sparked massive riots.
Police fired volleys of tear gas to disperse the youths in running street battles in the centre of the capital as several thousand demonstrators commemorated the death of 15-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos.
Lesbian elected assistant bishop
LOS ANGELES -- The Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles has elected a lesbian as assistant bishop, the second openly gay bishop in the global Anglican fellowship, which is already deeply fractured over the first.
Rev. Mary Glasspool of Baltimore needs approval from a majority of dioceses across the church before she can be consecrated as assistant bishop in the Los Angeles diocese.
Palin in Iowa fuels speculation
SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- Former Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin greeted hundreds of admirers in Sioux City on Sunday, fueling speculation about a possible presidential run in 2012.
Iowa's caucuses traditionally kick off the presidential nominating season, and Republican strategists saw the stop in Palin's national book-signing tour as a signal not to be missed.
"No politician comes to Iowa by accident," Republican strategist Tim Albrecht said. "Every politician knows the implications..."
Philippine troops arrest dozens
SHARIFF AGUAK, Philippines -- Philippine troops have arrested 62 people and discovered another major weapons cache after martial law was imposed in a southern province following the country's worst political massacre.
Thousands of troops have taken control of Maguindanao province in a government crackdown on the powerful Ampatuan clan, accused in the Nov. 23 killing of 57 people travelling in a convoy of a political rival.
