MPs visit war cemetery in the Netherlands

A delegation of Canadian MPs attended a ceremony at the Canadian war cemetery in Holten, the Netherlands today.

"It is an honour to visit the Holten war memorial. Today we remember those who served in the Second World War for the sake of our freedom, democracy and peace," said Rod Bruinooge, member of Parliament.

More than 1,300 Commonwealth soldiers are buried in the cemetery. Most of them died during the last stages of the war in the Netherlands, when the Canadian 2nd corps pushed into northern Germany.

Allied forces returned to the Netherlands four years after the country fell to German troops in 1940.

A wreath was laid during a ceremony to commemorate the memory of the fallen.
