Hamas rejects international observers in Gaza

DAMASCUS, Syria - Syria-based Palestinian militant groups including Hamas have rejected the idea of deploying international observers or troops in Gaza.

A statement issued by the groups after a meeting Saturday also rejected any security arrangement that infringes on the right of resistance against Israeli occupation. The meeting was attended by Hamas political leader Khaled Mashaal.

Hamas seized control of Gaza in 2007.

The two-week old Israeli offensive aimed at crippling militants' ability to fire rockets at Israel has resulted in more than 800 deaths in the coastal territory.

The statement comes hours after Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called on Hamas to reach an agreement to end the fighting.
