The London-based NGO Global Witness reports at least 908 environmental activists have been killed over the last decade. The deadliest year was 2012, when 147 were killed.
More than two-thirds of these killings "took place in the context of conflicts over the ownership, control and use of land," the report says.
The most dangerous country in the world for environmentalists is Brazil, with 448 killings over the last 10 years. The country's rapid economic growth has frequently brought powerful business interests into conflict with small and medium-sized farms as well as indigenous groups, with often-deadly consequences.
