Model guilty in castration killing

NEW YORK -- A Portuguese model has been convicted of murder in the castration killing of a Portuguese TV personality in a hotel room in New York City's Times Square.

Twenty-three-year-old Renato Seabra was convicted Friday of choking, bludgeoning and mutilating Carlos Castro.

Castro's bloodied body was found in January 2011. The 65-year-old Castro was also a writer.

Manhattan prosecutors say the two were a couple and Seabra was angry Castro had ended their relationship. Seabra's mother disputes the men were together.

The defence said Seabra was mentally ill. It said he believed he was on a mission to kill what he saw as the devil of homosexuality in Castro.

WikiLeaks soldier was suicidal

FORT MEADE, Md. -- A U.S. soldier acknowledged Friday he fashioned a noose and contemplated suicide shortly after his arrest on charges of engineering the biggest leak of classified material in U.S. history.

Pfc. Bradley Manning's pretrial testimony appeared to support the military's argument it was trying to protect the former army intelligence analyst from harming himself by taking away all his clothes, keeping him in strict isolation and shackling him when he was outside his cell.

Manning's lawyers argue the conditions he experienced for nine months at the Marine brig in Quantico, Va. amounted to illegal punishment.

Manning, 24, is charged with sending hundreds of thousands of classified Iraq and Afghanistan war logs and more than 250,000 diplomatic cables to WikiLeaks while working as an intelligence analyst in Baghdad in 2009 and 2010.

Obama to name defence secretary

WASHINGTON -- U.S. President Barack Obama could name his next defence secretary in December, far sooner than expected and perhaps in a high-powered package announcement with his choice for secretary of state, several senior administration officials tell The Associated Press.

The top names under consideration for defence secretary are former Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel, former top Pentagon official Michele Flournoy, deputy defence secretary Ashton Carter and Democratic Sen. John Kerry. Among those, Kerry is seen as desiring the secretary of state's job more.
