Yiddish makes comeback

JERUSALEM -- Oy Gevalt!

Yiddish has been uttered in the Israeli parliament!

Long disparaged in Hebrew-speaking Israel as the native tongue of Diaspora Jews, the centuries-old lingo has made a comeback with the first ever Yiddish Culture Day.

Marking 150 years since the birth of Sholem Aleichem, the popular Russian-Jewish author of Yiddish literature, and 20 years since the establishment of the Yiddish theatre in Tel Aviv, legislators gathered to discuss ways to preserve and promote the German-based language written with the Hebrew alphabet.

Mexican drug war

MORELIA, Mexico -- Mexican organized crime investigators have called in nine mayors and five state officials for questioning in a massive operation carried out across the drug-plagued state of Michoacan.

The Pacific state is home to La Familia cartel and has seen some of Mexico's worst drug violence.

Jamaica lottery scam

KINGSTON, Jamaica -- Americans sent more than US$30 million to this Caribbean island last year to claim winnings in a Jamaican lottery.

The trouble is there was no such contest.

Scam artists are making Jamaica a new centre for internationally known lottery schemes, aiding a network of violent gangs that authorities say are putting the money into drug and gun trafficking.

The United States and Jamaica are now teaming up for a task force dedicated to breaking up the cross-border schemes.

Protest in Georgia

TBILISI, Georgia -- Thousands of angry protesters converged on the central train station in the Georgian capital Tuesday, trying to block the trains as the opposition raised the stakes in its push to get President Mikhail Saakashvili to resign.
