House fire on Furby Street

Friday, 2:16 PM CDT

The cause of a house fire on Furby Street late Friday morning is believed to have been accidental.

Crews were sent to the home in the 500 block of Furby at 11:40 a.m. and declared the fire under control at 11:57 a.m.

Everyone inside the house got out before crews arrived.

“Preliminary observations suggest the cause of the fire was accidental and related to the home’s electrical system,” the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said in a news release.

Mounties still investigating hit-and-run collision

Friday, 2:11 PM CDT

RCMP are asking for the public’s help after a pedestrian suffered “life-altering” injuries in a hit-and-run collision nearly a year ago.

Mounties were sent to the scene on Provincial Road 272 in Pine Creek First Nation at about 2:25 a.m. on July 17, 2022.

A  24-year-old man who lives on the First Nation suffered “serious life-threatening injuries” and was transported to hospital. He was later taken to Winnipeg for further treatment.

RCMP said the man was walking when he was hit by a southbound vehicle. The suspect vehicle drove away.

While officers were at the scene of the crash, they were told about a vehicle on fire in the nearby community of Camperville. The brown 2013 Ford Escape sustained damage consistent with being involved in a front-end collision.

Winnipegosis RCMP are asking anyone with information about the incidents to call Winnipegosis RCMP at 204-656-7003 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

Occupants flee Whyte Ridge house fire

Thursday, 10:32 AM CDT

The occupants of a home in Whyte Ridge that caught fire early Thursday managed to escape to safety, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service says.

Fire crews were called to the two-storey house on the first 100 block of Hammersmith Road at 1:21 a.m., where they found smoke and flames coming from the structure.

Firefighters attacked the blaze from the outside, protecting nearby homes, before going inside to finish the work. Crews got the fire under control in just over an hour, WFPS says.

The WFPS is still investigating the cause of the fire.

Hostile house: heated spring session of legislature ends on hot note

Manitoba lawmakers growled, grappled and jeered their way through a tense spring sitting of the legislature, with accusations of shoving and bribery traded ahead of an expected contentious general election campaign.

On top of near-daily admonitions to demonstrate better behaviour, Speaker Myrna Driedger was forced to rule on five incidents over the past three months in which elected officials claimed another chamber member violated their rights.

The highest-profile incident centred around Sport Minister Obby Khan and Opposition Leader Wab Kinew, who shared a tense handshake at a New Democratic Party-sponsored event in April.

Khan alleged he received an earful of profanity and a shove to the stomach from Kinew, who was accused of refusing to release his grip on the Fort Whyte MLA’s hand in front of a crowd at a Turban Day cultural celebration.

Councillor roundly criticized for ‘drugged-out zombies’ remark

It has almost been nine years since Arlene Last-Kolb’s 24-year-old son died of a fentanyl overdose, but a city councillor’s critical remarks about drug users brought back the pain of his death.

Last-Kolb, the co-founder of Overdose Awareness Manitoba and a member of the national Moms Stop the Harm organizations, said she is angry about Coun. Jeff Browaty’s comment that the city needs more policing “due to all the drugged-out zombies” on its streets.

“We cannot let this be the last word, not when people are dying,” she said on Friday.

“I am the mother of a zombie who is dead from the toxic drugs, who got no help… it is a lot harder to call our loved ones zombies when you are talking to a mother. If Browaty is not talking about our children, then who is he talking about because this sounds like culture racism.”

Free Sunday and holiday parking, which has been offered without being publicized since November at several city-owned lots and the Millennium Library Parkade, looks set to be eliminated soon.

A new city staff report calls for multiple amendments to the parking bylaw, including the removal of that free parking, pending council approval.

“This is (a) correction. It’s sort of a bylaw mistake right now and we’re taking a step to correct it… It’s not really industry standard to offer it free on Sundays,” said Dan Locke, a policy analyst with the Winnipeg Parking Authority, in an interview.

Locke said the parking has been offered free on Sundays and holidays ever since a bylaw error was discovered in November, which had unintentionally allowed free use of the city lots on those days.

The City of Winnipeg will soon test a system that lets ambulances and fire trucks trigger green lights to help them reach an emergency faster.

The city is seeking a contractor to conduct a one-year “small-scale” pilot project involving some intersections, a new request for proposals reveals.

Coun. John Orlikow, chairman of council’s community services committee, said the technology is an important piece of ensuring critical response times are as quick as possible.

“The sooner we get there, the more lives we save. It’s that simple,” said Orlikow.

Four-year-old Lake Fox Komaransky used a water gun to soak his new friends at the Central Park splash pad while his mother and siblings kept cool under a nearby tree.

Sunshine Komaransky tries to take her three children to the park in the early morning three to four times per week.

“When it’s hot like this, you want your kids in the pool,” she said. “You just come sit under a tree and get wet.”

The humidex value is expected to climb to 38 this weekend, many families will head to community splash pads and find ways to stay hydrated and safe in the heat wave.

Manitoba physicians are encouraging people to take one simple step to improve their health this month, and offering prizes for people who pledge to catch up on routine screenings, eat healthier and get active.

Doctors Manitoba president Dr. Michael Boroditsky said many people put their health on hold during the COVID-19 pandemic as immunizations, disease screening and physical activity fell by the wayside over the past three years.

“This is a top concern for doctors,” Boroditsky said during an announcement at the Sport Manitoba Fitness Centre in downtown Winnipeg.

“With the worst of the pandemic behind us, hopefully, and summer just around the corner, now is a great time to focus on getting healthy, and it can start with one simple step.”

A pair of federal party leaders were in Manitoba on Friday, campaigning with local candidates ahead of upcoming June 19 byelections.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre and NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh both stopped in the capital city and were headed to the Winkler area to back their parties’ candidates in the Winnipeg South Centre and Portage—Lisgar ridings.

Both described the Liberal minority government as “out of touch” and made their pitches for how they’d each lead the country, if elected to do so.

In Winnipeg South Centre, a seat the Liberals have held for the better part of three decades, Poilievre was showing support for Conservative candidate Damir Stipanovic.

Cats and dogs don’t normally make for best friends, but sometimes opposites attract.

Such was the case with Scooby and Siren, a cat and dog pair at the Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter. Both animals started life off on a difficult foot, er, paw.

“Scooby came in in really, really horrific condition. He had hardly any hair on him… you could count every rib on him. He was in rough condition, but he sure made a beautiful recovery,” says Carla Martinelli-Irvine, executive director of the shelter.

Siren was taken in as part of a litter of six kittens, but even though all his siblings were adopted, he wasn’t.
