Cloudy day comes in aftermath of wild Sunday storm

It’s going to be a cloudy, windy day today in the aftermath of the downpour Sunday night in Winnipeg.

And it’s going to stay cloudy through the first half of the week in Winnipeg but there’s no more rain expected until Wednesday.

Today’s high will be an unseasonable 21 C, with winds gusting as high as 50 km/h.

Severe thunderstorms on Sunday evening produced funnel clouds and at least one confirmed tornado in southwestern Manitoba.

Environment Canada had issued tornado warnings late Sunday afternoon and at least one touched ground near Deloraine.

Weather officials said there were a number of funnel cloud sightings in the Deloraine, Boissevain, Waskada and Pilot Mound area south of Brandon between 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

An Environment Canada official said all the reports of funnel clouds touching down seemed to be in open areas.

Because there was no debris to speak of, the official said Environment Canada was not sending out staff to inspect the sites.

The storm also caused a fire at a two-and-a-half storey home in the 600 block of Sherburn Street in Winnipeg.

The fire, started by an electrical surge when lightning struck in the area, damaged the second and third storeys of the house, and one firefighter was injured and treated on site.

There was smoke and water damage throughout and the fire department estimated the value of the damage at about $70,000.

The week gets a little warmer as it goes on, but it’s not expected to get any higher than 24 C on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Things clear up and heat up by the weekend with a couple of hot, sunny days for Saturday and Sunday with forecasted highs of 26 C and 27 C, respectively.
