The addition of Cavan Biggio to the 10-day injured list with a cervical spine ligament sprain was among a series of moves by the Blue Jays ahead of their game against the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday night.
Biggio was left out of Toronto’s lineup on Friday because of neck pain, though he pinch-hit for Jonathan Davis in the Jays’ extra-inning loss. Manager Charlie Montoyo said Biggio’s neck seized up overnight.
“It’s real nagging,” Montoyo said. “He gets loose and then he’s fine, but then the more he plays he gets too uncomfortable.”
Biggio played despite multiple bruised fingers in the first month of the season.
“That’s what I love about this kid. Not many people do that any more, and he’s one of those that he’ll play hurt, but the best thing for him is (to) just take 10 days so he can get rid of that pain and be ready to come back,” said Montoyo, who seemed confident Biggio’s IL stint would last the minimum.
The Jays also optioned Friday starter Anthony Kay and reliever Jeremy Beasley to Triple-A. They recalled right-hander Ty Tice from the Buffalo Bisons and reinstated infielder Joe Panik (left calf strain) and high-leverage reliever Anthony Castro (right forearm strain). Lourdes Gurriel Jr. also returned to the starting lineup, at first base, after two days off because of a bruised left knee. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. moved to designated hitter.
Kay’s demotion leaves an open spot in the rotation for next Tuesday’s series opener against the New York Yankees, which Montoyo said will be a bullpen day “as of now.” Ross Stripling will start Monday in the series finale against the Rays.
Ten Jays who were on the 40-man roster are now on the injured list, though only Biggio and centre-fielder George Springer are on the 10-day list.
Springer, who has only played in four games this season because of various injuries, including the re-aggravation of a right quad strain he is currently rehabbing, ran sprints at 50 to 60 per cent on Saturday and did well, Montoyo said. Springer is not running bases yet. The manager called him day-to-day.
