Winnipeg artist Sarah Anne Johnson is one of five finalists for the Sobey Art Award, the richest prize for young Canadian artists.
Johnson, who works mostly with photographs, but has also used paintings, sculpture and performance art, was the Prairies and the North selection for the prize, which goes to a Canadian artist under 40 years old whose work has been exhibited in a public or commercial art gallery in the previous 18 months.
It’s the third time Johnson’s works have caught the eye of Sobey Art Award judges. She also made the Sobey shortlist in 2011 and was on the award’s long list in 2009.
Also nominated are Raymond Boisjoly, from Chilliwack, B.C., Abbas Akhavan from Toronto, Jon Rafman of Montreal and Lisa Lipton of Halifax.
The winner will be named on Oct. 28 at a gala at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in Halifax. The winner gets $50,000 while the other finalists receive $12,500 each.
