It is not an accident that Noise Complaint, an evening of cabaret entertainment at the West End Cultural Centre, takes place on the same day Donald Trump is sworn in as president of the United States.

A program of comedy and music, the event is intended to mitigate what, for many, is a political horror story.

The evening was the brainchild of local actors Andrea del Campo and Sarah Constible, conceived while the two were rehearsing the play Beautiful Man in November.

“When (Trump) won and we came in the next day, we were all kind of in a state of shock,” Constible recalls.

"When (Trump) won and we came in the next day, we were all kind of in a state of shock," Constible recalls.

"Andrea said: ‘What can we do so that we don’t feel helpless?’ So we wanted to create an antidote, something that celebrated love and respect and treating people like basic human beings."

The evening’s entertainment will include music performances by trio Sweet Alibi and Claire Thérèse, the satiric song stylings of the Fu Fu Chi Chi Choir (a choral group of which Constible is a member), a performance by del Campo’s improv troupe, Outside Joke, and standup performances by Winnipeg comedians Dean Jenkinson and Lara Rae, with audio-visual tech support by multi-disciplinary artist Jaymez.

If the entertainment is weighted in favour of comedy, Constible affirms that, even in the face of Trump, we can still laugh about this.

"What else can you do?" Constible says. "I do find it quite frightening. My sister works in (Washington) D.C.; she’s a climate-change scientist and she’s sort of in the thick of it there.

"It would be so easy to be despondent. So instead, we’re doing the opposite."

The evening is also a fundraiser for Sage House, a program of the Mount Carmel Clinic that provides services to women who are street-involved or engaged in survival sex work. It’s a worthy cause, Constible says, that will keep the proceedings positive.

"It’s about treating each other with dignity and love," she says.
