A popular Internet blogger and one of North America's most outspoken atheists is coming to Winnipeg to speak in early January.
Minnesota-based PZ Myers will be the guest lecturer after the Jan. 9 annual general meeting of the Humanist Association of Manitoba, the organization has announced.
Myers' topic will be "the war between science and religion," HAM official Donna Harris has confirmed.
Myers will speak at 7 p.m. at the CanadInns Club Regent Casino Hotel in Ambassador Room B.
Admission is free but because seating is limited, attendees are being asked to register. Email to firstname.lastname@example.org or phone 792-0931.
Myers, 52, was named 2009 Humanist of the Year by the American Humanist Association. He is an evolutionary biologist at the University of Minnesota and the author of science blog Pharyngula, where he has achieved notoriety for his criticism of the creationism and intelligent-design movements.
In 2008, he garnered headlines after he was denied admittance at the Mall of America in Minneapolis to a private screening of Ben Stein's pro-creationist documentary Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed.
HAM promotes the view that people can lead meaningful and ethical lives without the belief in a supernatural god.
Creationism and intelligent design, meanwhile, argue that the Biblical account of the beginnings of life is largely correct.
