A portion of Graham Avenue is getting an honorary street renaming for a Nobel Prize-winning writer from Colombia.
A civic committee Monday morning approved the request from the Colombian Association of Manitoba to rename the stretch of Graham, between Donald and Smith streets in front of the Millennium Library, Honorary Gabriel García Márquez Way.
The renaming is for a two-to-five-year period.
Members of the downtown development committee said that stretch of Graham should be used to honour other writers in a similar fashion in the future.
The request from the Colombian Association stated the renaming would "serve as a recognition of the Colombian community and its contributions to the ethno-racial diversity of Winnipeg."
