Perry Nodelman

Children's author and professor emeritus, University of Winnipeg

"While working on an academic project awash with theoretical jargon, what has kept me floating is Chris Raschka's Cosmobiography of Sun Ra, a children's picture book about the American jazz keyboardist and composer. The simple text offers a fairly factual account of Sun Ra's life, but Raschka's images turn those facts into something magical. Despite their often sombre colours, the images seem spontaneous, joyful -- and very alive. Previously unaware of Sun Ra's music, I downloaded some, and found myself listening to the aural equivalent of what these amazing pictures showed me: joy emerging from darkness. A great children's picture book for adults. A great children's picture book for children."
