Borealis, the film by Winnipeg director Sean Garrity about a gambler who takes his daughter to see the northern lights before she loses her vision, has been chosen the opening-night film at the Brooklyn Film Festival.
The movie, which stars Joey King, Kevin Pollak, Emily Hampshire and Jonas Chernick, has many Manitoba connections: Chernick, who grew up in Winnipeg, wrote and co-produced the film with his Banana-Moon Sky Pictures company along with Liz Jarvis of Buffalo Gal Pictures of Winnipeg. The film was also financed in part by Manitoba Film and Music.
"This is a huge honour," Chernick wrote in an email to the Free Press. "BFF is one of the hottest U.S. festivals right now, and its highly unusual that they would program a Canadian film as the opening-night movie."
Borealis has been held over for a fifth week in Toronto since opening on April 8 and the film enjoyed a three-week run at Landmark Cinemas' location at Grant Park Shopping Centre.
Garrity, Chernick, King, Pollak and Hampshire will all be on hand for the U.S. première, Chernick said.
