THE Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra will have a new resident conductor for the 2013-14 season.

Julian Pellicano will take over the baton for Richard Lee, who has recently been named music director of the East Texas Symphony Orchestra in Tyler, Texas.

During the 2012-13 season, Lee had been splitting his time between East Texas, the WSO, Toronto’s Korean Canadian Symphony Orchestra and the University of Manitoba Symphony Orchestra.

Pellicano has studied music at the Peabody Conservatory, the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, earned his masters of music in percussion from the Yale School of Music, where he also did his masters in orchestral conducting.

He had been on the faculty of the conservatory Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Mass., and was the principal conductor of the Longy Conservatory Orchestra and its artistic director of the ensembles program. He has been the conductor of the Norfolk New Music Ensemble since 2008.

He made his Carnegie Hall debut last season, performing with pianist Boris Berman, and has recently conducted the Orquestra Sinfonica de Porto Alegre, Brazil, the Royal National Scottish Orchestra, the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, the Eastern Connecticut Symphony, the New Britain Symphony and Boston’s Dinosaur Annex Ensemble.

Pellicano will lead the WSO in Pops, Soundbytes, Concerts for Kids, Specials and in educational concerts next season.
