PETER HUM QUINTET A Boy's Journey (Independent)
OTTAWA pianist Peter Hum composed the 10 mainly upbeat tunes on this debut CD, a good outing that highlights his skill as leader and accompanist on acoustic and electric piano.
The title track, a tribute to his father, and New Toy, a playful piece, stand out on a disc full of fine music. The closer, Three Wishes, is a delight.
Hum easily alternates from driving the music to making room for and supporting fellow musicians Kenji Omae and Nathan Cepelinski (saxophones), Alec Walkington (bass) and Ted Warren (drums). Hum is excellent on acoustic piano and shows restraint on electric, resisting the urge to relive the '70s.
The pianist has a day job as an editor at the Ottawa Citizen and a great jazz blog, jazzblog.ca, which you should check out. 4 stars
