JESSE COX, 36
personal coach at Starke CrossFit and Creative Conditioning
ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Jesse Cox is a dad first -- his children Angelica, 14, Donovan, 12, and Ariana, nine, are the focus of his world -- but he wears many hats after that. Cox, who worked as an advanced-care paramedic in the U.S. for 10 years, will be employing those medical and emergency skills again this fall. The 5-foot-9, 220-pound Cox makes time for a unique hobby -- adventure racing. He's participated in at least eight Spartan Races -- extreme events involving obstacles and time constraints. He'll be competing in the 2014 PEAK Death Race later this month in Pittsfield, Vt., an endurance race during which competitors must complete difficult, challenging and bizarre tasks over a 48 to 70-hour period. The Death Races, which include summer, winter, Mexico and team varieties, are a partner of the Reebok Spartan Race Series and includes 60 events around the world. He is a certified Spartan Group X coach. Anyone in Manitoba wanting to train for a Spartan event can do so with Cox at Starke CrossFit and Creative Conditioning.
What is your favourite workout?
My favorite workout is Murph. It is a crossfit workout. Many have seen the movie Lone Survivor. It is in memory of Michael Murphy. It was actually his favourite workout. He gave it the name of "Body Armor." I have loved this one for years: it is a one-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats and a one-mile run. I wear a vest with 20lbs to 30lbs as I do it. You do it as fast as you can.
What is your favourite workout song?
Depending on the workout, I can go from Rap to REM to Offspring to Nickleback to dubstep. I listen to everything. Kid Rock to Green Day. I have never picked just one song as my fav. The only thing I can't do is slow music. The music changes along with my mood and energy at the gym.
Your mind will always quit before your body does. You are much more capable then you think you are. Everyone has those voices of 'it is too early' or 'I am too tired' or 'nobody else is doing it'. Pay attention to the voices, learn them, then totally ignore them because they are always wrong. I was told that a long time ago and thought the person who told me was crazy, but I tried it. Like clock-work, there were the voices telling me every single reason why I can't or shouldn't. I paid attention, then completely ignored them. Now, I can see them coming a mile away in my training. Everyone has the same voices that say the same thing -- it is how you deal with them that determines how great you will become.
What is in your fridge?
Lemons, kiwi, apples, strawberries and red, yellow and green peppers. Spinach and cucumber. Milk, water, almond milk. In my freezer, I have frozen fruit for a smoothie. I have ham and bacon. I always have jalape±os. I love them with everything and so do my kids. I have no microwave in my house so everything in my fridge needs to be cooked and is fresh. V8 and cranberry juice and orange juice.
What is your guilty pleasure?
I love my ice cream... not going to lie! I take my kids and sit with them and talk and laugh as we eat it. So maybe it just the time we spend together when we have ice cream and that is why I like it, but ice cream is top of the list.
