Signs alerting the public that their images are being captured as part of a public surveillance camera project have begun to spring up in parts of the city’s downtown.
The Winnipeg Police Service, Mayor Sam Katz and other elected city officials will unveil and discuss plans and objectives for the cameras this afternoon.
Police have said the plan is to place cameras in areas downtown and along north Main Street that have high rates of crime and disorder. In all, 10 cameras at six different locations will be used.
At the end of the pilot project, police could decide to scrap the cameras or possibly expand into other areas of the city.
The Winnipeg Police Association said earlier the $460,000 cost of a proposed year-long camera project might be better spent on improving police response times and increasing the number of officers downtown.
