WINNIPEG — A 52-year-old Winnipeg woman pleaded guilty this morning to sexually exploiting a 14-year-old girl at her inner city home. However, she will do no more time behind bars if a judge approves of a joint recommendation.

Peggy Doreen Melquist, 52, pleaded guilty this morning to keeping a common bawdy house and living off the avails of prostitution in 2005 and 2006.

The case was delayed after a young woman who was set to testify did not show up in court.

Court heard a young woman who was a chronic CFS runaway used a room at Melquist’s house. Officers found a filthy comforter and used condoms on a bedroom floor there.

Court heard the teen told police she used the home to bring men to, who paid her for sex, then gave part of her profits to Melquist.
Melquist has already done about three months behind bars.

Crown prosecutor Mark Kantor and defence counsel Gerri Wiebe are asking she receive a six month sentence, which gives double credit for time Melquist already did behind bars.

Both lawyers said the joint recommendation means two other charges against Melquist would be dropped.

Judge Robert Dewar has reserved his decision until Tuesday.
