WINNIPEG – Speedskater Clara Hughes will be unveiled today as Canada’s Olympic flag-bearer, the Toronto Star is reporting.
Hughes will lead the Canadian team into B.C. Place Stadium for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics on Feb. 12, the newspaper said.
The 37-year-old native Winnipegger, the only Canadian to ever have won medals at both the Summer and Winter Olympics — in cycling and speedskating — is also an active humanitarian who wrote a cheque for $10,000 for the Right to Play charity after winning gold in Turin.
In other words, she’s perfect to carry Canada’s colours into B.C. Place.
“I mean, ‘Would I like to?’ Of course I would. Who wouldn’t? It’d be pretty awesome,” Hughes said in an earlier interview when she was touted as a possible candidate to be flag-bearer.
“I remember in my first Olympics, my first Olympic race (cycling) in Atlanta, standing on the start line, I was smiling and I felt so filled with energy and joy. I just thought, ‘I have the energy of millions of people inside of me. I am Canada. I am my country. I am my people. I am this huge thing.’
“I think it will be magical whoever gets to do that, to lead this Olympic team into that stadium. I think, `Wow, it’s huge.’”
