The great bassist Rufus Reid will join the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra in a Bass-ically New York concert in a new season that includes a Kansas City-style party to celebrate Ron Paley’s upcoming 60th birthday.

The six-concert 2010-2011 playlist opens Oct. 17 with Music from Stage and Screen with New York saxophonist Andy Farber and swinging arrangements of Broadway music.

Kansas City Suite, Nov. 7, has former Winnipegger Jim Mair, director of the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra, leading the WJO through the Benny Carter classic. This show doubles as a birthday bash for Paley, the pianist and big-band leader who will perform with the orchestra.

The Rat Pack will regroup Dec. 13 for a Frank Sinatra Christmas featuring local singers Gary Grosvenor, Johnny Summers and Adam O’Connor. The music shifts south on Feb. 13 with From Brazil, With Love featuring guitarist Marco Castillo and singer Amber Epp.

Rufus Reid appears March 20, and the season wraps up May 8 with From My Mother’s Songbook, featuring Lesley Corne-Wolman, a former Winnipegger singing the American songbook, and cellist Yuri Hooker performing the premiere of a composition by WJO member Jeff Presslaff.

All shows are at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Ticket information available at www.winnipegjazzorchestra.com
