WINNIPEG — Average weekly earnings in Manitoba increased at one of the fastest paces in the country in August, new Statistics Canada figures show.

The agency said today that average earnings for non-farm employees grew by 1.1 per cent to $819.02 from $810.27 in July.

Only the three other western provinces had bigger increases, ranging from 1.2 per cent in Saskatchewan to 1.9 per cent in British Columbia. The national average increase was 0.8 per cent.

The gain left Manitoba with the sixth-highest average weekly earnings among the provinces. Alberta tops the list,it at $1,045.24 per week.

StatsCan also released the August employment numbers for payroll employees — people who work for someone as opposed to being self-employed.

Manitoba was one of only four provinces to see an increase in the number of payroll employees from July to August, although its increase was the smallest of the four at a meagre 0.1 per cent — 565,200 versus 564,900. Saskatchewan had the biggest improvement at 0.4 per cent, while Canada saw essentially no change.
