The redevelopment of 18 hectares of land south of Taylor Avenue into a new residential and commercial area has cleared the first hurdle at city hall.

Winnipeg developer Shindico wants to build a seniors’ care home, apartments, retail stores, offices and possibly a hotel on a parcel of land situated between the old Manitoba Hydro building and the developer’s existing Grant Park Festival development.

The upcoming reconstruction of the Pembina underpass at Jubilee Avenue would pave the way for the development, which would be called Grant Park Pavilion.

Shindico.com Winnipeg developer Shindico wants to build a seniors' care home, apartments, retail stores, offices and possibly a hotel on a parcel of land situated between the old Manitoba Hydro building and the developer's existing Grant Park Festival development.

On Tuesday, council’s property and development committee voted 3-1 to approve a master plan for the area.

Specific details and developer agreements will be reached at a later date.

Couns. John Orlikow (River Heights), Mike Pagtakhan (Point Douglas) and Justin Swandel (St. Norbert) voted in favour of the plan.

Committee chairman Jeff Browaty (North Kildonan) voted against it. He cited concerns not all of the developer’s obligations regarding infrastructure improvements have been spelled out.
