Sounds like Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff is getting his machine in motion as July 5 and the opening of free agency gets closer.

Cheveldayoff’s top three restricted free agents are defenceman Zach Bogosian, winger Blake Wheeler and centre Bryan Little, and talks have begun with two of the three players.

Bogosian’s agent Bob Murray told the Free Press preliminary talks began last week.

John Woods / The Canadian Press archives Winnipeg Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff could be faced with a major off-season decision: Does he stick with Claude Noel as his coach or bring in Alain Vigneault?

On Monday morning, Little’s agent Anton Thun said “very preliminary,” talks had opened. Keator, however, said “not yet,” when asked if negotiations regarding Wheeler’s future had started.

All three players are set to become restricted free agents, meaning the Jets can match any offer sheet made by another club.

The Jets must offer RFAs a qualifying offer prior to the opening of free agency to retain negotiating rights if a deal has not been signed.

Centre Alex Burmistrov is also set to become an RFA but there is talk the player will not re-sign with Winnipeg and his agent Mark Gandler has been taking the temperature of other teams to see if there is a trade market.

Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff has commented on free agency only to say there are too many scenarios to discuss at this point.
