A home in North Kildonan was completely destroyed by fire this morning.

At 7 a.m., fire crews were still dousing hot spots through blown-out windows of the one-and-a-half-storey home in the 200 block of Cheriton Avenue, just east of Henderson Highway.

Patrolling police officers noticed the burning home first about 4 a.m. and called it in.

“Extensive damage… there was basically flames out of every window,” said District Fire Chief Don Enns of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service.

There were no injuries and it’s believed no one was home when the blaze began.

“We had to adopt a defensive strategy and we couldn’t put crews inside,” Enns said. “It’s very tough to push fire in as opposed to pushing it out, so it did present a fair amount of issues for us.”

Fire investigators are now on the scene.
