A man is reportedly dead following a suspicious fire in a downtown apartment tower that police are said to be investigating as a homicide.

Police maintained a visible presence Sunday at the Holiday Tower, 160 Hargrave St.

It marked the second day police were outside the front doors of the complex.

Emergency crews were called on Saturday at around 5:30 a.m. to a fire in a suite in the south tower of the twin residential towers.

They reported they found a man who was badly injured. He was taken to hospital with serious injuries. The emergency crews later referred to the incident as suspicious.

The fire caused an estimated $10,000 in damage. It started on a stove.

The man’s condition was described as critical on Saturday. As of Sunday, police said they had no updates. They would neither confirm nor deny reports that the man had died.

At the tower Sunday, some residents said they feared the worst even before the reports of the man’s death.

“I heard somebody might have died,” said one woman Sunday morning.

Laura said she watched the police at the location all day Saturday.

She said the south tower was also the location of a suspicious death barely one month ago.

On June 2, police said homicide investigators had been called in after a report of a death. The body of a male was found inside a suite.

A security guard who was keeping an eye on the address Sunday said there had been a heavy police presence all Saturday but there was no word from the authorities on the investigation.
