A light, smoky haze was part of the morning commute for those working in the Kilcona Park area.

A small fire at the General Scrap industrial yard in the R.M. of Springfield caused a slight disruption for residents and neighbouring businesses early this morning. Smoke started billowing out of the Bismarck Street scrap yard at approximately 5 a.m.

Unsure with what they were dealing with in terms possible smoke toxicity levels, police and emergency crews immediately blocked off Springfield Road between Lagimodiere Boulevard and Day Street.

KEN GIGLIOTTI / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS A fire at a Springfield Road scrap yard has closed the area due to heavy smoke.

Springfield has since been re-opened to traffic this morning.

There were no injuries. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

General Scrap is no stranger to fires in its yard. In June 2012, a massive inferno burned over two days and forced fire crews to enlist the service of a helicopter to battle the thick smoke and 25-foot flames.
