A fire claimed a landmark building near Grand Beach Provincial Park as the former Grand Marais Bakery was destroyed on Thursday afternoon.

The bakery, also formerly called Rosie’s Bakery and Cafe, was one of at least three buildings affected by the blaze which started in the early afternoon.

Jean Fedak, who lives two streets from the site of the fire, said there were three buildings on fire.

“It was about 1.30 p.m. I was standing at my window and all of a sudden there were flames shooting out from there,” Fedak said in a telephone interview.

“We got someone to phone 911 and there were fire services here from Grand Beach, Victoria Beach and Lac du Bonnet. There were three buildings, including the Grand Marais bakery. They were all destroyed. But thank God, no one was hurt. There was no one in these buildings. We don’t know why. And we don’t know how it started.”

RCMP are investigating and the cause of fire is not yet known.

“You know, we are all very scared of a fire around here,” Fedak said. “Everyone lives right next to each other and the lots are very small. Things could spread very quickly.”
