Winnipeg police haven’t identified the gender of the body pulled from the Red River this morning but witnesses say it appears to be that of a woman.

“There were pink runners,” said Edward Payjack, a construction worker who was on the job nearby when the Winnipeg fire department’s water rescue boat recovered the body east of the Louise Bridge. It appeared to be wearing shorts, he said. It was face-down in the river so he wasn’t 100 per cent sure of the gender, said the rattled father of two.

“It’s always going to be on my mind now,” Payjack said before returning to work Friday morning. “It’s another human being.”

A woman posted on Facebook that she was riding over the bridge just after 8 a.m. when she saw the body and called police. The post by Maria Morris described it had pink shoes, pink shorts and a black and grey plaid sweater. She posted that it appeared to be an aboriginal woman’s body with long hair.

Police got a call at about 8:15 a.m. about a body in the river, said Const. Eric Hofley. He said he had no further information about the body’s discovery, and couldn’t say whether it was male or female.
