Finalists for the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association’s Manitoba Athlete of the Year and Team of the Year award have been announced.
Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews looks to make it three wins on the trot in the Male of the Year category.
The Winnipeg native has won the award four times in total.

Joining Toews on the ballot is Pan Am Games bronze medalist Jay Lyon, University of Manitoba standout lineman David Onyemata, Brandon Wheat Kings forward Nolan Patrick and amateur golfer Devon Schade.
Pan Am Games double gold medalist Chantal Van Landeghem is vying for her second Female Athlete of the Year nod on the woman’s side.
Joining her is volleyball star Rachel Cockrell, Leah Kirchmann, who was chosen as Manitoba cycling’s top female road rider, Desiree Scott, the veteran midfielder who appeared in 14 games for Canada’s national women’s soccer team and Alanna Sharman of the Bison women’s hockey team, who won the CIS women’s national scoring title and the rookie of the year award.
Braden Calverts Deer Lodge curling rink, which placed third at the World Junior Curling Championships heads up a strong cast in the Team of the Year category.
The RBC Cup champion Portage Terriers, Western Hockey League standout Brandon Wheat Kings, Manitoba’s ringette team and the WinMan Wesman volleyball team round out the category.
Final voting will come via various sports media in Manitoba. Winners will be announced at the 60th annual Athletes of the Year dinner on Jan. 22.
