Jacob Trouba will play for Team North America’s under-23 squad at the World Cup of Hockey this fall, his agent confirmed with the Free Press on Thursday.
Trouba is the last of the Winnipeg Jets’ restricted free agents yet to be signed to a new deal. His agent Kurt Overhardt at KO Sports had no comment on contract talks between the club and his client on Thursday morning.
Trouba, 22, will join teammates Mark Scheifele and Connor Hellebuyck for the tournament that kicks off on Sept. 17.
The defenceman has been the centre of speculation this offseason, including a report that the Boston Bruins were preparing a large offer sheet for the right-handed shot prior to opening of free agency on Canada Day.
Trouba recorded six goals and 15 assists in 81 games last year, his lowest point total in his young three-year career.
The Rochester, Mich., native was drafted ninth overall by the Jets in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.
Trouba played two seasons in the United States Hockey League with the USA Hockey National Team Development Program before heading to the University of Michigan. Trouba signed with the Jets after his freshman season with the Wolverines after being named a first-team All-American.
Trouba won gold at the 2013 World Junior Hockey Championships with Team USA and twice won gold at the World U18 Championships.
