WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Washington Capitals defeated the Winnipeg Jets 4-3 in overtime at the Verizon Center Thursday night.
Alex Ovechkin scored the winner for Washington at 3:21 of overtime, taking a pass from defenceman John Carlson and beating Jets netminder Michael Hutchinson high to the glove side on what was a Washington power play brought on by a bad Jets line change moments earlier.
The Ovechkin goal sullied what had otherwise been yet another remarkable Jets comeback.

With the Jets trailing Washington 3-0, Jets defenceman Toby Enstrom scored his first goal of the season —short-handed — at 2:11 of the third period, shooting into an open net that had been left vacant by a collision moments earlier between Caps netminder Braden Holtby and defenceman Carlson.
Jets forward Adam Lowry then narrowed Washington’s lead to 3-2 at 5:22 of the third period, taking a pass from defenceman Dustin Byfuglien in the slot and beating Holtby. It was Lowry’s second goal in two games.
And then Jets forward Marko Dano — making his first appearance for the Jets this season — tied the game 3-3 at 11:11 of the third period.
Ovechkin made the score 3-0 for Washington at 10:04 of the second period, banging home a rebound past a sprawled Hutchinson.
Capitals forward TJ Oshie made the score 2-0 in favour of Washington at 1:48 of the second period, converting a pass from linemate Andre Burakovsky past Hutchinson.
Capitals forward Nicklas Backstrom opened the scoring for Washington at 14:38 of the first period, picking up a rebound and beating Hutchinson on what was just the fourth shot of the period for Washington.
The Jets outshot Washington 10-4 in the first period.
The overtime loss dropped the Jets season record to 4-6-1. The Jets play in Detroit Friday night against the Red Wings before moving on the New York, where they will play the Rangers Sunday night.
