Urban Warrior Alliance using presence at Portage Place mall to deter drug dealers

The area in back of Portage Place Shopping Centre is a known drug-dealing site and it must be stopped, say aboriginal activists.

The dealers are not just dispersing illegal drugs but are endangering the lives of innocent passersby, said Denny Wood, a member of the Urban Warrior Alliance.

“We’re making our presence known and telling people we know drugs are being peddled here,” Wood said.

About fifteen people staged a rally behind the mall on Saturday afternoon, some wearing camo gear and waving red flags.

They have gathered there for various periods over the past four days. Wood said they have been approached by dealers who think they are looking to score drugs.

Instead, the warrior alliance members confiscate their drugs. “They think we’re buying and then we crush it in our hand,” he said.

“There is too much violence happening in and around the mall here,” Wood continued. “We need people to know we’re not going to stand idle while they peddle their drugs.”

A man named Tatty, who said he is with the Crazy Indians Brotherhood, said people have been robbed at gunpoint behind the Portage mall, including his aunt. She was robbed at gunpoint last week and had her purse taken.

“They wanted money to get more drugs,” he said.
