Multiple fire departments responded to a large grass fire between Brandon and Carberry on Thursday afternoon.
The grass fire, which broke out near Camp Hughes, threatened houses near Roundell Road as more than a dozen firefighters and trucks responded.
A firefighter on scene on Thursday said the cause of the fire wasn’t yet known, but firefighters from the Carberry North Cypress-Langford Fire Department and Shilo also responded.
The plume of smoke filled the air and crossed the Trans-Canada Highway. It could been seen from Brandon.
The Manitoba RCMP tweeted officers were evacuating homes near Shilo at approximately 5:40 p.m.
Neither Blue Hills or Carberry RCMP could be reached for details on Thursday evening.
Highway 351 from Carberry to the junction with the Trans-Canada Highway was closed by emergency services.
