A shortage of anesthesiologists in Winnipeg has forced the cancellation of at least 300 surgeries next month.

A Shared Health spokesperson said Friday most of the cancelled surgeries are elective outpatient procedures, with no plan yet on when they’ll be rescheduled.

The anesthesiologist staff shortage is affecting all Winnipeg hospitals, the spokesperson said.

“There is no impact to urgent and emergent surgeries and elective cases are being prioritized based on the urgency of the procedure and the length of the patient’s wait,” the spokesperson said.

“Work to minimize the impact of this reduction is ongoing, with patients being contacted directly if their scheduled procedure is affected.”

Procedures that do not require anesthesia will be scheduled in place of the cancelled surgeries, the spokesperson said.

“Recruitment is underway and every effort is being made to optimize the scheduling of anesthesiologists in order to minimize the impact to patient care,” the spokesperson said.
