RCMP in Selkirk have arrested and charged an Ontario man with attempting to smuggle illicit drugs.

Mounties were called to at a business on the Manitoba city’s Main Street at about 4 a.m. Monday, after witnesses reported a man breaking windows and trying to pry open a door, RCMP said Tuesday.

Officers found the suspect nearby, who was later found to have a Canada-wide warrant.

He was taken to the local police detachment, where officers discovered the man had ingested a balloon containing what’s believed to be heroin and methamphetamine in an attempt to smuggle them into a prison. He passed the balloon at the detachment, then was taken to hospital.

A 23-year-old man from Thunder Bay, Ont., has been charged with multiple offences, including two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Recently, according RCMP spokeswoman Cpl. Julie Courchaine, officers at the Selkirk detachment have encountered similar circumstances of alleged attempted smuggling over the past year.

Mounties have made two of those arrests public.

On Jan. 9, a suspect in the custody of Selkirk RCMP passed a balloon filled with methamphetamine. A 26-year-old Anola man was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking.

On Jan. 9, RCMP on patrol on Selkirk’s Main Street at around 3:25 a.m. were flagged down by a driver, who said he’d picked up a hitchhiker who was causing a disturbance and refusing to get out of his car.

Officers confirmed the man’s identity and discovered he was wanted on several warrants. He was arrested and taken to the local detachment.

The suspect then began asking officers to take him to Stony Mountain Institution, and they began to suspect he was attempting to smuggle something into the federal prison. The man later passed a balloon carrying methamphetamine.

A 26-year-old Anola man was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and was remanded into custody.

On May 30, 2022, a man in custody at the Selkirk detachment for a parole violation had a medical issue while waiting to be transferred to another correctional facility. He passed a balloon of meth at the detachment, but another was stuck in his body.

He was taken to hospital, where he was successfully treated.

A 21-year-old Winnipeg man was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking.

RCMP did not indicate Tuesday when asked whether investigators believe any of the incidents are linked.
