R.F. Morrison School staff were on alert this week, after reports of coyote sightings in the nearby residential area kept students indoors for recess Thursday.

Seven Oaks School Division superintendent Brian O’Leary said students at the Garden City English-Ukrainian bilingual K-6 school had indoor recess out of an abundance of caution after a neighbour reported a coyote — but not on school property.

“There have been a few sightings in the residential area near the school, there haven’t been any on the school grounds,” O’Leary said Friday.

School is out Friday for parent-teacher interviews; O’Leary said recess should resume as normal Monday.

“(R.F. Morrison staff) have been in touch with conservation (officers), I’ve been told that the risk is very low, they’re just taking this precaution in any case.”

In December, a coyote approached a student on the grounds of Emerson School, resulting in students remaining indoors for the day.

At the time, the River East Transcona School Division said it would be adding extra outdoor supervision and keeping students indoors if necessary.

If a coyote approaches or shows aggressive behaviour, contact a conservation officer at the local district office or the provincial tip line at 1-800-782-0076.
