BRANDON -- For the first time ever, the Brandon Wheat Kings will have the No.1 pick in the Western Hockey League's annual bantam draft.
The Wheat Kings won the right to select first overall in the May 1 draft after this morning’s WHL bantam draft lottery. The Saskatoon Blades officially won the draft lottery, but Brandon had acquired the right to swap first-round picks with the Blades as part of the trade package for forward Brenden Walker back in 2012. The Blades/Wheat Kings had a 19 per cent chance of winning the draft lottery for the WHL's six non-playoff teams.
The first overall pick this year will follow last year's draft-day bonanza for Brandon in which the Wheat Kings wound up with the fourth overall pick (forward Nolan Patrick) and sixth overall selection (defenceman Kale Clague).
