A local hub for artists, bookworms and foodies will be shutting its doors this fall.
The owner of Aqua Books and EAT! Bistro, at 274 Garry Street, made the announcement in a letter this morning. Regulars of the downtown "Cultural City Hall" received the bad news via email from the owners of the bookstore and restaurant.
"We've had a great ride, but unfortunately the financial burden has become too much," writes Kelly Hughes, co-owner of the downtown business. "Candace and I are, quite honestly, pretty devastated to announce that the doors of Aqua Books and EAT! Bistro will be closing forever."
The letter goes on to admit the couple’s business venture was an ambitious one. Hughes points to e-books as one culprit in the bookstore’s demise, but also a lack of readership due to the rise of technology and social media.
By the time most people turned on their computers this morning, Aqua Books was trending on Twitter in Winnipeg.
The store will remain open for at least a few weeks until all scheduled events are done and will be open its regular hours.
