Brandon Fire and Emergency Services members work to remove a body from the second floor of a home on First Street in Brandon on Wednesday after an overnight fire gutted the home.

A body was found inside a Brandon home that was destoryed by fire early Wednesday.

The body was found on the second floor of the First Street home.

Because the second storey was weakened by the blaze and was unsafe, a lift was required to remove the body, and workers had to cut a hole in an exterior wall for access.

A 911 caller reported the fire at about 2:50 a.m. It was engulfed in flames when police and firefighters arrived on the scene.

Police closed the 200-block of First Street to traffic in both directions.

The home appeared completely gutted, with the front of the house charred and a massive hole in the attic roof.

Residents of a neighbouring home were evacuated as a precaution.

The Brandon arson task force is involved in the investigation.
