Canadian Olympic champion speed skater Cindy Klassen is visiting Syrian refugee families this week in Jordan.

Klassen, who is in Jordan with Canadian Lutheran World Relief, is taking part in the distribution of sweaters, heaters, carpets and warm clothing donated by Canadians to Syrian families living in the Za’atari refugee camp as well as communities in the northern part of the country.

"I’m very much looking forward to meeting people who have been so resilient in the face of terrible danger and hardship," Klassen said in a statement today.

"I hope that I can offer some support and call attention to the need for help."

CLWR is giving aid to the refugees thanks to more than 70,000 new and gently used sweaters donated by Canadians as well as a $1.1 million grant from the Canadian government to distribute the winter items.
