Jonathan Toews Community Centre wants to build a new $16 million field house.
This morning, council's executive policy committee revealed government will contribute about $10 million towards the project. The city plans to devote the proceeds of a previous land sale -- just under $5 million -- towards the project and to borrow an additional $5 million to cover a provincial grant the city has already been spent.
Mayor Sam Katz said the province gave the city a $5-million grant through the Manitoba Winnipeg Infrastructure Program, but Winnipeg has spent the money on other projects. Katz said the city will now borrow funds to fill in for the provincial grant.
EPC approved the move at a meeting this morning.
City and provincial officials plan to hold an announcement at Jonathan Toews Community Centre later this afternoon.
