The province issued a travel alert Sunday saying Highway 513 from Lake St. Martin to Lake Winnipeg has been closed because of flooding caused by an ice jam.

The affected section of the highway is near Gypsumville, about 261 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg.

A wind chill warning remains in effect. This morning in Winnipeg it felt like -42 Celsius.

In these conditions, frostbite can occur in as little as 5 to 10 minutes, says Environment Canada.

A bitterly cold air mass associated with an Arctic high pressure ridge is dominating Southern Manitoba.

In Winnipeg, low temperatures near minus 30 this morning, combined with southwest winds of 15 to 20 kilometres per hour, will give extreme wind chills in the minus forties.

Today’s high is expected to reach -19 C but will feel like -33 C with the 20 km-hour south wind.

For the start of the work week, Monday’s windchilll is expected to feel like -39 C. Cold, sunny days are forecast for the rest of the week.

At least the sun is shining.
