What would life be like in Winnipeg ... without mosquitoes?
Winnipeg filmmaker Angela Heck will get $20,000 to explore that question after winning the 2012 MTS Winnipeg On Demand $20,000 Pitch on Tuesday.
Ten participants had three minutes each to pitch their project to a jury of industry professionals, including Maureen Levitt (Super Channel), Danielle Audette (APTN) and Kim Bell (MTS TV) at The Fairmont Winnipeg event. Following each pitch, the judges had five minutes to offer feedback and to ask questions.
Heck, whose resumé has included positions such as National Film Board publicist and star of Guy Maddin’s first feature Tales from the Gimli Hospital, walked away the winner of the $20,000 licence fee with MTS Winnipeg On Demand with her project BUZZ ... (Manitoba Mosquitos) examining "the culture that surrounds the not-so-humble mosquito."
"This is really overwhelming! It sounds trite but you really do dream about this," Heck said after winning the giant cheque. "It’s so exciting to be able to pitch in front of a hometown crowd and be so welcomed and ultimately rewarded for your efforts."
