Greg Selinger addresses nomination meeting.
WINNIPEG -- The Manitoba NDP will dedicate its re-election effort to the memory and values of the late Jack Layton, Premier Greg Selinger told a crowd of supporters tonight at St. Boniface College.
The rally, which drew about 300 people and saw several dozen NDP candidates take the stage of a lecture hall there, erupted in a loud cheer when the premier made the announcement.
"People were so inspired by his example, the values he represented," Selinger said of the late federal NDP leader afterwards. "He dedicated his last campaign to (former Saskatchewan premier) Al Blakeney. It’s only fitting that we return the honour to him and dedicate our efforts and energy to his memory."
The rally coincided with Selinger’s nomination meeting. The NDP has now nominated candidates in all 57 constituencies.
Although, the fall provincial election has yet to be called, officially, the three main parties have several events planned for this week.
Selinger will travel to St. Leon, Brandon and Dauphin over the next two days. But before leaving Tuesday morning, he will unveil a "vision document" at the University of Winnipeg.
"It will give you a big picture of where we’re going," Selinger said this evening. "You’ll see quite a bit of substance there."
Meanwhile, late Tuesday afternoon, the Progressive Conservatives plan to launch their ‘McFadyen 2011 campaign kick-off" at the Viscount Gort Hotel. The Conservative rally will showcase the candidates the party hopes will vault them into power for the first time since 1999.
On Wednesday, the Manitoba Liberals will make an announcement in support of young people. That will coincide with a visit from Quebec Liberal MP Justin Trudeau.
