The Brandon Wheat Kings will have a specialty licence plate all their own.

Justice minister Andrew Swan, who is also the minister responsible for Manitoba Public Insurance, made it official.

"Brandon’s team slogan this year is ‘It’s time’ – and today I’m happy to announce it is, in fact, time for a Wheat Kings specialty licence plate," Swan said. "The Wheat Kings hold a special place in the hearts of countless Manitobans and this beautiful new plate will give these fans a chance to display that affection – while also supporting a great cause."

The plates will retail for $70, of which $30 will go towards the Brandon Humane Society.

The plates will retail for $70, of which $30 will go towards the Brandon Humane Society.

"We are thrilled to be partnering with the province and Manitoba Public Insurance to make these plates available to the public," said Kelly McCrimmon, governor, general manager and head coach of the Wheat Kings. "Our organization has the most passionate fans in the Western Hockey League. This plate will be the perfect accessory for vehicles in Westman and across the entire province."

McCrimmon had said last March that the team was looking into getting a specialty plate of its own.

Fans will be able to purchase their plates at any of the province's Autopac agents, as of next Monday, Feb. 24.

The Wheat Kings plate is the 11th specialty plate unveiled by the province, but the first that is Brandon-specific. Motorists are also able to show their support for the Winnipeg Jets, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (two different plates), the Winnipeg Goldeyes and Curl Manitoba. There are also specialty plates available for firefighters, veterans and for collector vehicles, as well as options for bilingual drivers and trailer plates available that support Fish Futures.
