Adam Lowry is flashing some unexpected offence early in the 2021 NHL season.
The Winnipeg centre, known more for his defensive prowess, scored his third goal of the year as the Jets jumped out to a 1-0 first-period lead over the Edmonton Oilers tonight at Bell MTS Place.
Lowry had just four goals in 49 games during the abbreviated 2019-21 season.
Mathieu Perreault won a puck battle behind the net and dished to Lowry in the low slot for the game opener at 10:41.
Andrew Copp appeared to scored his third of the year with about six minutes left in the period, but the Oilers successfully challenged that goalie Mikko Koskinen was interfered with during a scramble in the crease.
Koskinen faced 16 shots, while Jets goalie Laurent Brossoit turned back nine drives.
Winnipeg is 4-1-0 in the NHL's North Division, while Edmonton is 2-4-0. The clubs meet again Tuesday at Bell MTS Place.
