Two Ontario men have been arrested after defrauding a Thompson woman of more than $50,000 in a romance scam.
Thompson RCMP said on Wednesday the woman met a man on an online dating site in July 2019, and in the weeks ahead sent him money thinking they were in a romantic relationship.
The woman went to the RCMP after the amount of money exceeded $50,000.
The RCMP said it took two years, and the seizure of hundreds of pages of documents, before the arrests were made in Toronto on Sept. 27.
Amaechi Akalezi, 41, and 25-year-old Olanrewaju Agbaje, were both charged with fraud over $5,000 and theft over $5,000.
Both appeared in a Winnipeg courtroom on Tuesday and were remanded in custody.
